In the Room and Beyond: The Power of Therapy Work Outside the Counselling Space

Published on 5 November 2025 at 10:35

When we sit together in the counselling room, it’s a space that’s just for you — It's your time... it's your space...somewhere to slow down, reflect, and make sense of what’s been happening in your world.

At Your Space Counselling & Psychotherapy, I’m honoured to hold that space with you—to sit alongside whatever life is bringing, with compassion and curiosity. It’s where we explore things gently and honestly, without pressure or judgement.

But here’s something I often share with clients: the real shifts usually start to show outside the room. I only see you for 50 minutes each week so that leaves 10,030 minutes in the rest of the week.

The conversations we have in therapy can spark insights and understanding, but it’s how those insights find their way into your everyday life that really makes the difference. That’s where the work quietly continues — in small choices, little reflections, or even in the moments you pause and notice something new.

Why the “between sessions” work matters

It’s not about setting homework or ticking off a to-do list (no one needs more of that!... unless you want it of course... but I am keeping an eye out for you 'perfectionists' out there).

Anyway It’s just about staying curious and connected to yourself as life keeps unfolding.

Here’s why it helps:

  • It helps things sink in. What we talk about in therapy becomes real when you start noticing it in action — maybe in a conversation, a feeling, or a pattern you hadn’t seen before.

  • It keeps the momentum going. Therapy is 50 minutes of your week — the rest of your life is where you get to practise and notice the changes happening.

  • It builds confidence. The more you explore outside the session, the more you start trusting yourself to handle things differently.

  • It deepens resilience. Life will still throw curveballs, but the more you bring self-awareness into your everyday world, the steadier you’ll feel facing them and understand what is going on.

Simple ways to keep the work alive between sessions

It doesn’t have to be big or complicated — it’s the small, mindful things that matter most. Keep it simple!

  • Jotting down a thought or feeling that stood out from the week.

  • Pausing before reacting and noticing what’s happening inside you.

  • Giving yourself permission to rest when you need it.

  • Speaking to yourself a little more kindly.

  • Or simply recognising that you’re doing the work, even when it’s messy.

There’s no right or wrong way to do it (everyone is different and wanting/noticing different things) — it’s about awareness, not perfection.

How I support you in this

In our sessions, we’ll talk about what’s coming up for you — what’s feeling difficult, what’s changing, and what’s starting to make sense. I’ll help you notice patterns, offer reflections, help you to reframe, look at it from different angles and hold a safe space to explore.

Then, when you leave the room, you take those insights with you. They begin to gently weave into your everyday life — in conversations, choices, or even quiet moments of awareness.

That’s where real, lasting change begins. Not in the therapy room but outside. That is real life where we put into practice things we learn, notice or understand in the therapy room.

A gentle reminder

Therapy isn’t just what happens in the room; it’s how you carry what you discover into the rest of your world. Each time you pause, notice, or make a small change, you’re continuing the work in your own way.
